Some residents are uncertain when permission is required for tree work in a Conservation Area. Permission from the City Council is required for cutting down, uprooting, topping or lopping of any tree having a diameter of more than 75mm measured at a point 1.5 metres above the ground.
Permission is not required for the pruning, in accordance with good horticultural practice, of any tree cultivated for the production of fruit.
For more details see www.southampton.gov.uk/s-environment/trees/conservation-areas.aspx
On this web page is a link to a form for notifying the Council of proposed tree work.
If notice is not given, then for actions which are likely to destroy the tree, the maximum fine on summary conviction is £20,000, otherwise £2,500.
