HCERA received an email from a resident, Peter Martin, suggesting that we should include a link to a BBC News item about the centenary celebrations of an area in Cardiff. I wondered what possible relevance this could be to us. On investigating, I found that the appearance of Rhiwbina Garden Village has a remarkable resemblance to the estates designed by Herbert Collins in Southampton. Rhiwbina was based upon the masterplan prepared by Raymond Unwin, one of the leading architects of the Garden City Movement, initiated by Ebenezer Howard. Howard was a great inspiration to Herbert Collins and they became close friends.
To see the Conservation Area Appraisal for Rhiwbina go to www.cardiff.gov.uk and follow the links to “planning”, “conservation”, “conservation area appraisals”. Which reminds me that we should get up enough steam to produce our Conservation Area Appraisal.
