I would say that to become Lord Mayor and First Citizen of Southampton is an enormous honour. Nominated and voted in by my colleagues and fellow councillors, it brings a deep sense of ancient tradition and responsibility.
The title, given by our late Queen Elizabeth just before she died, was only the fourth in her 70 year reign. It elevates our position in the UK, joining only 23 other cities in England, a rare honour indeed.
Last May, I became the 801st Mayor and second Lord Mayor. I have in that time, attended many engagements giving a deep connection with so much going on in the city. Many people give their time to others to help communities in different ways.
We are a city of sanctuary and have a wonderfully diverse population here. I have loved the Chinese New Year Celebrations, the South Indian Arts and Cultural Society, representatives from African nations and the raising of national flags of the many nationalities here. These to mention only a few which bring people together. From opening a local store, to meeting a Royal Visitor, duties are varied, interesting and so worthwhile. These include chairing the Full Council in the Chamber, where the public can attend in the Gallery. Promoting and Fundraising for my Charities is a high priority. I am grateful for the contribution from the Christmas Carol event in Ethelburt Avenue last Christmas. My three charities are Sea Cadets, City Farm and Saints Foundation. They all give children a chance in life in different ways. Plus the Saints Foundation has a group for Senior Saints, helping the older generation.
My year ends in mid-May and I will look back on these months and reflect. I will hope I have done all I can and thank everyone for their kindness and support for what has been an amazing experience.
It is the people who make this great city what it is and I thank you all.
