On November 9th, Harry Willis Fleming gave a most interesting talk at The SeaCity Museum on the Swaythling Remount Depot. He now has more information and photos than are on his website, www.swaythling.org.uk/ which unfortunately he has no time to update. The South Camp on which our Conservation area sits, was built in August 1914. It was initially tented and later had 183 corrugated iron huts. A light railway ran throughout the camp. By December 1918, some 390,000 equines had passed through. Unfortunately, there are no service records, specific to the Remount Depot, of the 25,000 men involved, although individual service records can be found.
You will recall from previous Newsletters that we would like to have a memorial to the Swaythling Remount Depot. We welcome submission of a design for such a memorial, perhaps from a young person. If interested, please email us, so we can exchange ideas.
